Children & Adolescents
The large number of stressors that adolescents are faced with today have made the task of transitioning from latency to adulthood very challenging. Many adolescents who enter therapy have multiple problems with the diverse systems with which they interact - family, school, peers, community at large. A therapist working with this client group needs to use a variety of therapeutic strategies that included different modalities like client-centered, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and - very importantly - problem-solving. Interventions often need to include whole systems. The adolescent client cannot be seen simply as a stand-alone figure in a void. He or she is part of whole that is larger than the sum of its parts.

For adolescents (and younger children) psychotherapy can have a variety of benefits. First and foremost these younger clients receive emotional support form a neutral source. Therapy can help them resolve conflicts with other people (family, peers, teachers). It will allow them to better understand their feelings and problems and behaviors. Some of the specific goals of therapy may include change in behavior, improvement of relationships or they may be more general like the reduction of anxieties and improvement of general self-esteem. Treatment length depends on the complexity of the presenting problems and issues.

When I work with children and/or adolescents in my private practice I take a systems approach. Although my client may be the young person, I like to involve the extended family and other stakeholder in the client's life (school, peers, etc.) A collaborative effort is generally best to achieve an improvement in client overall functioning and wellbeing.
